I stopped highlighting halfway through this piece because it all should be highlighted. These are the hard truths most rank and file Democrats refuse to face. Because then they'd have to admit democracy in America is a sham. You might as well say you no longer believe in God. People can't handle that - they desperately need to believe in a America - whatever form of America they believe exists. They can believe in God without a church but they can't believe in America without the political system making sense. If it's all a con job, then what were we doing standing in line to vote? What were we paying our taxes for? Why did we put the flag out on national holidays and sing patriotic songs? Why did we pledge allegiance with such fervor? Why did we spend all those hours listening to the reassuring nonsense of NPR?
And so on.
This is why fascism will win the day. The people on the fascist right know about power - how to wield it, how to win. And in the end, the rest of the country will be carried along just like Germany was in 1933-34 and for much the same reasons: it won't be the America they knew (which in reality never existed) but it will have all the sexiness of fascist hero and flag worship and a sense that we all belong together in something greater than ourselves: one people, one nation, one leader. In reality, it's what we've always dreamed of anyway (democracy is so messy and complicated) and it's coming wrapped in a flag carrying a cross and we're going to get it good and we're going to get it hard.
